A flat roof gets more direct sun than almost any other surface on a house. There are no tiles overlapping to break up the exposure, and no gutters channelling water away from the surface itself. So when the sun is out, the whole roof is being cooked, and when it cools overnight it contracts back down. Over a summer, that cycle repeats hundreds of times.
The good news: a GRP flat roof is one of the better systems for handling this. The bad news: no roof is immune, and there are two kinds of summer damage worth understanding, because one of them is normal wear you can ignore, and the other is worth acting on.
What UV actually does
The topcoat on a GRP roof is a pigmented resin, laid on top of the fibreglass laminate to protect it and give the finished colour. UV light breaks down the resin at the surface over years, very slowly. The visible sign of this is called chalking: the surface loses its gloss and, in older roofs, develops a faint powdery haze that rubs off on your finger.
Chalking on its own isn't a fault, it's the topcoat doing exactly what it's designed to do, taking the UV hit so the laminate underneath doesn't. On a five- or ten-year-old roof it means the surface has aged normally. What matters is whether the wear has stayed at the surface, or gone deeper.
Thermal expansion, and why edges matter
The other thing summer heat does is push the roof around. GRP, timber decking, lead flashings and any adjoining brickwork all expand and contract at slightly different rates as the roof heats and cools. Over one hot day that's imperceptible. Over an entire summer, weak joints can loosen.
That's why the edges of a flat roof are almost always the first thing to fail: the upstands where the roof meets a parapet wall, the trim along the eaves, the point where a chimney passes through. The middle of a healthy GRP roof will still be in great shape while the edges are quietly giving up. Why GRP copes better than felt or EPDM
All flat roof systems take UV, but they don't all handle it equally. Felt hardens, cracks and loses granules over years of exposure. EPDM rubber is UV-stable but softens in real heat and can bubble or shrink at the seams. GRP sits in the middle: the laminate is exceptionally stable once cured, and the topcoat can be recoated without disturbing the roof underneath, so you can refresh the surface periodically rather than replacing the whole roof.

When surface wear becomes a real problem
You want to catch it while it's still cosmetic. Three signs the topcoat has stopped protecting the roof properly:
- Hairline cracks in the resin that you can see close up, particularly around fittings, edges or upstands
- Softening you can feel with a firm press, meaning the resin has begun to break down below the surface
- The colour visibly patchy, exposing the fibreglass strands underneath in worn spots
Any of those, and the roof is telling you it needs a recoat or a targeted repair before winter, not a full replacement. Left through a wet autumn and winter, though, small surface wear is exactly where water works its way in and turns a topcoat job into a full re-lay.
What good prep looks like at install
A lot of long-term UV resistance is decided at install. A GRP roof laid on a properly-sanded, dry deck with the right resin ratios and the right thickness of topcoat will still look good in 15 years. One rushed with a thin topcoat or the wrong colour balance will chalk noticeably within five.
