With a pitched, tiled roof the season barely matters. A flat roof is different, especially a GRP fibreglass one, because it isn't just laid down, it's built up wet and left to cure into a single solid sheet. That curing depends on the weather, which is why timing a flat roof job well can be the difference between a smooth two or three days and a run of frustrating delays.
Why the weather matters
A GRP roof is resin and fibreglass matting, laid onto a timber deck and then finished with a coloured topcoat. The resin hardens through a chemical reaction, and for that to happen properly it needs a dry surface and reasonably mild temperatures. Rain on a half-cured roof, or laying onto damp boards, risks a poor finish. Very cold days slow the cure right down. So a good installer plans the job around dry, settled weather rather than fighting against it.
Can you have one fitted in winter?
Yes. We work all year round, and a lot of flat roofs go down perfectly well in autumn and winter, we simply watch the forecast and pick the dry windows. What changes in the colder, wetter months is predictability: a job that would take three settled days in July might get spread out while we wait for rain to clear. If your roof can wait, summer gives you the cleanest run. If it can't, we'll still get it done, just with a bit more juggling around the weather.
"Best time" doesn't mean "wait"
There's an important exception. If your roof is actively leaking, or it's clearly failing, don't sit on it until next summer to save on weather delays, a winter of water getting into the deck will cost you far more than any seasonal convenience. Get it assessed, and if it genuinely needs doing now, we can fit a temporary covering to hold things until the permanent roof goes on. If you're not sure how urgent yours is, our guides on the signs a flat roof needs replacing and whether to repair or replace will help you judge.
Book ahead of the rush
Because summer is the ideal window, it's also the busiest, good installers get booked up through the warm months. If you want your roof done while the weather's on your side, it pays to get your quote in early rather than calling round in August hoping for a slot. The same goes for a GRP overlay, which also cures best in the dry.
